I would like to answer Q3-a: Tasks that require physical prowess
Take Hercules for example. He is the son of Alcmene; however, Hera was jealous of Alcmene and attempted to kill Hercules many times but always failed. Hercules did one thing that made him famous --- rescuing Prometheus who stole the fire to the humans. After Hercules had three sons, Hera made him temporarily insane and he killed his wife and the children. In punishment for the crime Hercules was given twelve impossible tasks.
    1. slay the Nemean Lion
    2. slay the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra
    3. capture the Golden Hind of Artemis
    4. capture the Erymanthian Boar
    5. clean the Augean stables in a single day
    6. slay the Stymphalian Bird
    7. capture the Cretan Bull
    8. steal the Mares of Diomedes
    9. Obtain in the griddle of Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons
    10. obtain the cattle of monster Geryon
    11. steal the apples of the Hesperides
    12. capture and bring back Cerberus
Only if he completed these tasks would he be a free man.

  2. Hello, Vinia. I am Emma Chang and my student ID is 99540316. I want to share my opinion on Q3-a, to talk about a hero who completed the tasks which require physical prowess. And I choose Theseus to be an example. Since he was born, he would never saw his father and he was told to leave a huge stone to prove that he was stronger enough to start a journey to find his father. He trained himself so hard and finally accomplish many difficult tasks. Theseus killed a robber giants, Club-carrier and Sinis and Sciron. He also won a game and killed the cruel wrestler, Cercyon. The best known for what he had done is that he killed the monster,Minotaur.
All of these tasks need great physical strength. I think the story wants to tell us that with great efforts, we human being without super power can also achieve our goals. Although going through many difficulties, we will eventually succees just like Theseus.

  3. Hello, Vinia. I'm Justin 99540307.

I'd like to answer question no.1-a
I think the power sructure of the Olympians similar to the patriarchy of human society. Take Zeus for example. He is a man not a woman and he acts as the governor of the world. His position is similar to the emperor in Chinese history. He can decide everything. Also, in Greek mythology, Mars and Athena are both the representatives of war, but Athena would never surpass Mars somehow. As a result, I think the reason for that could be the patriarchy among gods and goddess.

  4. Hi, I'm Neo 98540451.
I want to answer question 3-b.

As we know, Odysseus is a great hero with intelligence. Throughout his long journey, we can see how he use his wisdom and courage to face those hard challenges. Most of them are dangerous temptations, and he finally got over.

1.The lotus flower making a man forget his homeland and family is the most obvious form of temptation.
2.Circe gives him a life of ease and self-indulgence.
3.The Sirens tempt him to live in the glorious memory of the past.
4.Calypso gives him the greatest temptation of all immortality.
5.In the Phaeacian palace, he is offered the love of Nausicaa and a new life that is richer than his rocky Ithaca.

However, in the end, Odysseus returned to his own country.

I'd like to talk abaout question 4-c
    Cultural and social taboos
Nowadyas, it is strange for people to have sex with animals. And everyone in our society can't accept it. Besides, it seemed impossible for me to accept it and believe that it really happens. However, Zeus, the almighty god, changed himself into a swam and have sex with Leda. If this happens in our socisty, the media would put a spotlight on this issue and I believe who does that can't be accepted by our society and he will receive great debate for what he has done.

I’m going to answer question 1-d.
Odysseus was not afraid Poseidon’s curse. However, on the way home, he encountered a lot of difficulties. One of these is in order to avoid the Sirens who were a group of beautiful but dangerous women, Odysseus told his men to put small pieces of wax into their ears and he also fastened himself tightly to the ropes. Because of that, they could not hear the wonderful but dangerous singings. And the other is the nymph named Calypso was deeply in love with Odysseus and wanted to offer him immortality if he would stay with her forever. However, Odysseus chose to live and die with his beloved wife Penelope.

  8. Hello, I am Daisy (99540342).
I would like to answer Q.4-a.
It is obviously that the Gods and goddesses in Olympia all have super power. Like the god of the dead, Pluto, took Persephone away without her promise, just because he was crush on her at the first glance. Also, the most powerful God, Zeus. When he finds the woman that he likes, he takes her away or let her become pregnant. I think it is because they think that they are the powerful men, so they can do these kinds of things. Nowadays, we still have the sexual discrimination. The men seem to handle all the things. They can do what ever they want, so do the Gods in Olympia.

In Greek Mythology, the most powerful god is Zeus, he is a man not woman, and it has many heroes, all of them are men. Its lots of stories are about father and his strong son, women just are supporting roles. Men can have many wives but women can not. Nowadays, it’s still lots of country is patriarchy. Greek Mythology is not only stories but also affect people very long.

Take Hephaestus for example, he is Vulcan, the God of fore, the workman of the immortals, Aphrodite’s consort, is ugly and lame. He and Athena are the patrons of civilization. Thus, they protect cities so as not to let other people invade.

I think in the Greek mythology you can obviously see the relationship between the father and son.
In it you can see the son must obey the father and father is the most powerful one in the family.
Nowadays, it is the same as the family type of us.
And in the book, you can also know one point that Men are the more important part of world and family than women.
So most of the character mentioned in the books are men and especially the son of the Zeus.
All of them have power, wisdom, courage….

  15. Hi Vinia, I am Yuka 99540352,
and I would like to discuss questions 3b, "adventures that need intellectual wits." I think, out of the many Gods/Goddesses/Demigods/Humans, Odysseus has the most interesting story. And this is not because his story was written into a 600-page epic. But the fact that he alone possesses wits, courage, integrity and strength; which, made him the ultimate human hero. He also plays his role as a king to the pinnacle. He loves his subordinates, he shows extraordinary leadership, and he is constantly thinking about his countrymen, land, and family. Odysseus is very close to being the ideal human being besides his flash-of-the-moment arrogance, which he spends ten years paying for. Odysseus conquers many impossible tasks with a combination of abilities. And although his story has been analyzed by countless historians, I truly believe it was a simple tale about wrestling the misfortunes of life, and never giving up despite what we have been told.

  16. Hi, I am Jessica 99540319
I would like to answer question number four.
Among all of the Greek gods, Zeus not only is the most powerful god, but also have more desire over beautiful women than other gods. He always falls in love with many different women, and brings them more damages than benefits. His wife Hera cannot stand his unresponsible behavior, so she tortures those women who lie with Zeus, to get her own revenge.
We can see this kind of phenomenon happening everywhere in the present society. People tend to take more than one lover at the same time, they have good relationship with every woman; however, they refuse to settle down for only one. It resulted in many issues emerging in the nowadays society.

  17. Hello, Vinia
    I am Amy. 99540348
Today I want to answer Q5-a
    Ans:
We can see many monsters or creatures with strong power, some even have supernatural power. What does it mean? I think these creatures mean the challenges that people will face in the future. But I have been wondering whether I should choose “from the inside” or “from the future.” We may be faced with many struggling in our hearts and we may encounter many things in the future. So maybe the Greek gods and goddesses have fragile hearts and they are afraid of something, but they just never show them out. So they use the horrible creatures to imply their difficulties.

    Centralized “I” and marginalized “Other”
From the Unveiling Greek Mythology 1, Jupiter and his brothers brought the Golden Age to an end. At last, instead of everybody being everybody’s friend, everybody was everybody’s foe. So, in all the world, instead of peace, there was war; instead of plenty, there was starvation; instead of innocence, there was crime; and instead of happiness, there was misery.
And that was the way in which Jupiter made himself so mighty.

  19. Hi, Vinia. I'm Vicky 99540323.
I would like to answer 3-b,adventures that need intellectual wits.
When we encounter some difficulties, we need some wits to solve them, instead of physical powess or physical violence, for they may make the problem worse.
Take Perseus for example, I think he would fail to obtain the head of Medusa without Mercury and Athena's help. Mercury gave him his own winged slippers. They told how to go there and what he needed to get before obtaining Medusa's head. With four things, sword, shield, pouch, and cap of Darkness, he successfully achieved the mission. He used shield to know where Medusa was, drawing his sharp sword and dashed quickly downward, so swift, that the head of Medusa was cut from her shoulders. Quick as thought he thrust the terrible head into his pouch and flew away. The two older Gorgons chased him, but the Cap of Darkness hid him from their eyes. So, he successfully achieved the mission. If he obtained Medusa's head with his physical powess, he would definitely fail. That's why we need some wits.

  22. I would like to elaborate on point four. The fact that Greek gods possess human characteristics and flaws makes them extremely interesting and entertaining. For example, all the things in which the gods represent, have counterparts that greatly shadows the dark side of humanity. However, it is also projected through the greek gods as well. Such as lust, greed, and gluttony.

The different tasks and deeds of the Gods and heroes that sometimes require physical strenght and sometimes cleverness are equal to the different jobs of us humans. Some jobs require strong men and can not be done if you don't have the physical strength, no matter how clever you are (like workers), others can't be done no matter hoe strong you are (like teachers).
