Topic Three (2010/9/27~10/4): What is the nature of Zeus' power?
Zeus is the most powerful among the Olympian dieties. First of all, he holds a lethal weapon, i.e., the lightning or thunder bolt. Secondly, he is the god of rain (or fog), which proves to be vital to all creatures on Earth.
However, added to these qualities is his special skill in transforming his physical forms. What surprises people is the purpose of this transformation, i.e., to seduce women in various forms of disguises. For example, he transformed himself into a golden shower to visit one of his mistresses, i.e., Danae.
All these women bore him sons and daughters, who later on became great heroes and horoines in history.
Topics for discussions:
(1) Why was Zeus "unfittingly" characterized as a womanizer? He is the most almighty god on Mt. Olympia after all.
(2) What is the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women? Is it simply lust? Does he intend to find a woman of his true love?
(3)Does Zeus have the desire to produce more children by different mortal mothers? In this case, do you think Zeus can be considered also as a god of fertility?
(4)What is the nature of his power? Is it natural, intellectual, reproductive, or supernatural?

Zeus tried to seduce women because of his first wife, Hera. Since Hera was the goddess of marriage, she might try to make couples together. However, her husband was the mightiest god, the ruler of heavens. She had no rights to prevent Zeus from having affairs with so many women. Thus, it is kind of dilemma whether Hera should protect her marriage or let Zeus keep flirting and showing his lust. I consider finding true love is just an excuse. It’s a nature for men to have affairs. On one hand, men are easily to get rid of old things. On the other hand, men like to search for the sense of excitement. We can conclude no matter god or human, we all have same character.

It was because the role he played as a mighty god that he could transform him into different forms to approach various women who were beautiful and fair. He just looked for what he loved, so he didn’t know he was regarded as a womanizer by people nowadays reading Greek Mythology. Even though he was the most powerful god in the world, he couldn’t rep women against their wants. He didn’t have the right to possess them as his property.

I think Zeus doesn't have the desire to produce more children by different mortal mothers but to love fair women all over the world. In addition,I think he is a man of much love. For the reason that he always falls in love with beautiful women. However,he is also an irresponsible man because he never shows his real appearance to his lovers but always transforms himself into many kinds of forms to approach his lovers. By the way, he is such a coward when Juno is angry about his affairs.
I don't think he can be considered as a god of fertility. Because I think what he has done to fair women just are caused by his lust and too much love. So he dosen't deserve that glory.

It is said that Zeus is very afraid of his wife, Hera, but he also likes to find other women that he likes. I think that it is because Zeus is the mightiest god among the Olympian deities. He thinks that he is the most powerful man in the world. I think he is simply lust, because of those women’s beauty. When Hera found that her husband seduced other woman, and she also punish that woman intend of Zeus. I think it is why Zeus always searches for beautiful women. I do not think he intend to find a woman of his true love. He loves the woman one after another. He just searches for excitement.

I think we couldn't say the reason why he seduced so many women is simply because of lust. However, we also can't say that he wants to find "a" true love in his life. He always falls in love with the fair women he sees from sky. It seems that he have fallen in love with different maidens so many times, but “ not at the same time”. Surely, he always put all his heart into his loving affair each time. It seems that he just can't control himself into falling in love with lovely women. I think we just can say that he never try to find somebody he wants to fall in love on purpose, but meet them by incident.

I think man like woman is natural things. It is the truth that Zeus had been have many woman. But not in the same time. And I don't think Zeus try to find his truth love. No matter how many women he has, it's look like he still can't content his desiration. He likes beautiful girl. Actually, everybody like beauty and homesome people. So it's not surprise anymore. The children he born most of them are hero. Maybe it is not an accident. Maybe he has a plan to born children to become hero.

I don't think Zeus wants to reproduce so many children.I think he just enjoys flirting with "beautiful and fair" women such as Io, Leto, Danae, just to name a few. It's normal for men to fall in love with elegant ladies. However, I don't know why he likes to transform himself into an animal. Because of his jealous wife? Because of his mighty status? At any rate, I despise him since he is a Casanova. He never makes a commitment to any mortal woman. It's irresponsible for him to get all innocent women pregnant and disappear without a note. If he is faithful to his wife, there will be less tragedies. Therefore, he doesn't deserve the name "the god of fertility" since he doesn't know how many children he really has.

Zeus liked women just like any other men, however, since he was the mightiest god above all, he had more needs to find more and more women to satisfy himself.
I don't think that he cared to find his one true love at all, he just simply enjoyed the progress of finding it, and it didn't matter that whether he found it or not.
In his many romances, I can see that he did care for those women he loves, when they were tortured by Hera, but he never ceases his desire for getting more pretty women.

ReplyDeleteI whould like to answer queation 2.
In my opinion, the main reason for Zeus to have seduced such a great number of women is not only out of lust, but also of his wife,Juno. In the Greek Mythology,Zeus was the almighty God,and nothing can afraid him but his wife. In the plot of IO and Zeus, you could see his cowardice toward his wife. However cruel Juno did to IO,Zeus could only stay behind and said nothing until Juno fell asleep. Therefore,it was the queen of the Gods that inspired Zeus's longing to other women, who was quite fairy, and obident to what he needed(the main point). Zeus, himself, wasn't eager to find his true love but a fairy young lady to ease his presssure toward Juno. What he really wanted to do was to get along with those nymphs or mortal women for fun,for he knew that it was impossible to get married with those women he loved.

*Does Zeus have the desire to produce more children by different mortal mothers?
A:No, I don't think that Zeus intends to have so many children. Maybe he just loves women one after another. Every time when he falls into love with women, he wants to get closer to them.
Therefore, that's why there are so many children of Zeus'.
*In this case, do you think Zeus can be considered also as a god of fertility?
A:I admit that he really was the father of countless people. But in my opinion, he does not deserve that name:god of fertility cause I bet he can't even tell the name of his children when they encounter.

I personally think that Zeus doesn't have the desire to produce children, they are just an extension or living proof of his love affairs.I don't even think that he feels responsible to them. His endless flirtatioin with women leads him to endless of offsprings could have make him god of fertility but I think it would be sarcasm at this point. But he could easily be the god of flirt!

ReplyDeleteI'd like to answer question no.2. "What is the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women? Is it simply lust? Does he intend to find a woman of his true love?"
Well first of all I think the driving force is the same for every single man on earth, mightiest god or not, Zeus is a man too, and man loves woman, we don't really need to explain the reason, because that's just how it is, and what's more is that Zues is very powerful, he has the power and the charm to make any woman to fall in love with him, so if I were Zues, I would probably do the same. From what I think the reason why Zues soduced so many women is because ... there're always prettier girls, one is never enough. And because he can, he has the power to get anything he wants. As to whether he wants true love or not, I think he just wants girls that are young and fair, it seems to me that true love doesn't play an important role in process.

Exactly , he is the mightest god amid the cloud
and he is the principal god of the Greek , a ruler of the heavens , a king of the sky and the earth , He has so many great name , But why he want to do that ? In my viewpoint , Maybe He just want to seduce women in various forms of disguises , A tough guy with big stronge power that the earth might broke by his one little finger (I myself want that power too!!!) The most important thing it is . The Juno , the goddess of marriage , though she has the power to determine who and who to be togther . But the Jupiter is the mightest god , mayber he can control the power from the Juno .

What is the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women? Is it simply lust? Does he intend to find a woman of his true love?
I think all men on earth pursue beautiful girls, even Zeus is no exception, let alone he is the mightest god. And I think there’re several reasons why he keeps falling in love with different women. First of all, there’re too many beautiful girls in the world, and every time Zeus shows up as a young handsome guy that drives all the girls crazy, Zeus can make them fall in love with him without any efforts. Second, his wife, Hera always finds out that he has a third person, so she will try her best to stop Zeus from seeing the girl again. Sometimes it is hard for him to save the girl, and then he meets another girl, so the situation replays. I think that’s the reason why he can’t find his true love because whenever he meets a girl, their relationship won’t last long.

If Zeus exists the present day maybe he can't b e considered a god. I think he should pay attention to only his true love women.

Zeus is powerful, he can get what ever he wants, even woman by seducing them. He can change his appearance into whatever they like. In the ancient times, I don't think that being a womanizer is really something unusual, it seems like men always have more than one to love.

At first, when I read the books about Greek Mythodology, I was confused why an almighty god did such terrible things. Nevertheless, I began to think that these kind of things were common even in today's society. It's the instinct that all creatures will be attracted by the opposite sex, even the gods. In my opinion, though Zeus already had his wife, he just couldn't help but keep wandering among women. No matter just for his own satisfaction or not. Therefore, I think we can't truly understand if he intends to find a woman of his true love.

(2)What is the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women?
Is it simply lust? Does he intend to find a woman of his true love?
Women attract men, and men attract women. It's natural.
The most important is that Zeus is the most powerful god, and he can do what he wants without others permittion.
I think it's the main reason why drives Zeus' overdoing. Just like emperiors in ancient age, one emperior might have thousands of wives.
They had right to do so all because they were powerful.
I don't think Zeus intneded to find a woamn of his true love because he never saw a woman as a treasure and never protected one of his lovers well.
No matter if his lovers had babies, he ended up leaving them.

ReplyDeleteAs a god of the world, Zeus was very powerful. He lived on the top of a very high mountain where he could look down and see everything in the earth. So if there was
beautiful women in the earth, Zeus always could know who she is and got her.
Being a powerful man, he must think these beautiful women belonged to him and loved him. He could have these women although he already married. Just like emperors of the ancient china, he wanted these women had his children and he could carry on his kingdom.

I don’t think it’s unfitting that Zeus is characterized as womanizer. That’s because Zeus is the mightiest god on Mt. Olympia. Besides, he is handsome and powerful. He has magic power to seduce many women. In reality, a successful man has already owned everything he wants and needs like material things. However, women for them are different. They are not satisfied with one woman. Actually they would like to own lots of women.

I think it is not simply lust for Zeus to seduce women. It must have some causes. In my opinion, this cause might have something to do with Hera, his wife, who is goddess of marriage. She is very jealous of every woman who has relationship with Zeus. She would damage those women and make them painful. Due to this, Zeus is afraid of his own wife little by little. His love turns out to be fear. Although he is the king of the Olympian, he can’t divorce Hera. That’s why he wants to find true love. Though his way of finding true love is not appropriate, I think he has the desire to find his lover.

Although people say it's natural that men and women attract each other, but if a man loves his wife enough, he won't have an affair with other women. I think Zeus doesn't love Hera at all, but he does these things, I mean seducing women, not merely to annoy Hera. Maybe he loves every woman he seduces, maybe he is especially interested in beauty, or maybe he hopes he can have offsprings as more as possible. But finding true love? I don't think so. Finding true love is not hanging around and seducing every beauty making them pregnant no matter what their willings are.

Maybe, he couldn't feel the harmony with his wife and also was under the pressur by her. Actually, I don't think that he wanted to find his true love. He just enjoyed thrill when he was with other woman constantly.

I think Zeus has the desire to love everything wonderful. No matter it’s goddess, women, or even men, as soon as Zeus sees any fair people he’ll just go to them. It’s only because he loves tasting anything fresh and the excitement from doing these immoral things. At the same time, he’s got married with Hera, but he can’t help having affairs with those wonderful ladies. Though powerful as he is, he respect Hera and therefore he can only do these things secretly.
However, every woman or goddess having affairs with Zeus bore his offsprings, but it doesn’t mean it’s Zeus so fertile, the main contribution is the one who give birth to those children.
One thing for sure is Zeus is a god of power, that’s why all his children are great talented, unprecedentedly wonderful, or even as powerful as he is.

In my opinion,it's just like questioning "why they have to eat even though they are gods?" Zeus, the almighty god, who was characterized as a womanzizer is not fit our common thought of immortal. However, it reveal an idea that Zues is still a man who has desires like every normal people do. Besides, why such kind of character is played by Zeus rather than other male god such as Poseidon, Hades, or Ares is because that he is the most powerful god and the feedback would be the strongest and it can effectively turns our notion upside down about those untouchable gods and goddess.

In my opinion there are some reasons.
First, as everybody know that Juno is good at envying and a little be oppressive.
Maybe his wife personality so he wants to find other kind of women who is pretty and gentle.
Second, in the traditional opinion man always has a lot of wives. So Zeus might just like the man who lives in old ages and can have many beautiful girls.
Third, Zeus might be a person who likes new things and hate old things.
He might like to pursue excited things like being disguises.

As everyone knows, Greek Gods are full of emotions, like people do. I think there are three reasons why Zeus seduces so many women. First, Zeus is attracted by beautiful and fairy things, but every time it comes to be women. Second, it may be the love that comes from his deep heart to do something with human. Third, he may be bored with doing the routine like watching what people are doing. It may be possible that he wants to find his true love. However, it is not fair for him to seduce so many women and end up with tragedy. Or, it’s his another way to punish human beings?

fascinated by beautiful women. He were not intend to find a woman of his true love ,he seduced women just for his self-desire. And Zeus have the mightest power in the world, he also can transform into any appearances, so making them full in love with him was not a task at all.

I think the reason why Zeus has seduced so many women is that he is a womanizer and he has a severe wife,Hera, that makes him feel annoyed and exhausted. So he wants to find other woman that is different from Hera.In my opinion, a man who has a beautiful but severe wife often wants to find women that are tender and obedient to him.Maybe, Zeus wants to divorce, but at that time, there is no this kind of thing.Or Hera is also powerful, and he can't live without her.But he doesn't love her. Thus, the way he think of is find another women in secret.I think he does't intend to find a woman of his true love.He just likes to have lots of beautiful and tender women. After all, gods are erotic.

I think Zeus is just a womanizer. What he really desires is not produce children with mortal women, but just play around with mortal beautiful women. In my opinion, he is irresponsible and a coward sometimes. Take the the story of Io an example, Zeus was always afraid that his wife, Juno would know his affair but he didn't stop and he was the reason Io was transformed into a cow and suffered a lot. In some ways, Zeus maybe can be considered as a god of fertility, because he did have many relationships and children with other women.

I think the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women is just because of lust. I don’t believe he intended to find his true love. Because Zeus is the mightiest god, he rules the whole world and he also has strong power. He can do whatever he wants and doesn’t need to worry about being punished. As a result, he probably will take every woman for granted. He may think that to pander to him is women’s duty.
He doesn’t love those women, he just love their beautiful faces and figures. All he had done just for his own satisfaction.

he is like an emperor who got a kind heart, to be able to contain everything happen within his reign, which is earth and mt. olympia

ReplyDeleteI think Zeus doesn't have the desire to produce many children. He just sees a fair woman and falls in love, then he will try his best to approach the one and the children are only the proof that Zeus is a womanizer.
In my opinion, I don't think Zeus can be considered as a god of fertility because he is quite irresponsible. He never makes any commitment to the women. He just loved them, made them pregnant and left, so he doesn't deserve the name of god of fertility.

What is the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women? Is it simply lust? Does he intend to find a woman of his true love?
As we all know,Zeus stands in the highest position of all gods and goddess. Like a typical empire who always want to get what ever he wants. He is full of ambition and desirousness. However, there is no satisfaction in Zeus's dictionary. He wants more and more especially beautiful women.
Like most of the empire in the history, Zeus are always finding his true love. However, the reason he can't find his true love is that when he find a pretty girl, he find another more beautiful one. I consider Zeus as a typical type of most of the men on Earth.

question 2
The thought that Zeus seduced earthly women to produce heroes seems likely until you take into consideration that in most cases these heroes sooner or later caused him troubles. So why not cease this activity?
Another possibility is that he just finds earthly women more attractive than the goddesses that he is surrounded with, may it be their appearances or their pureness. Everyone to their own, as they say.
Yet another possibility is that he does it simply because he can. Perhaps the other gods would like to be about chasing women, too, but lack the ability or fear the wreath of others that would be offended by it. But Zeus, being, as it is, the mightiest, doesn’t need to fear anyone (but the scornful looks of his wife).

It's Zeus's affair that so many great heroes and gods appear in Greek mythology. So, he is definitely a god of fertility.

I think the reason why Jupiter can be so attractive and having so many girls is because he is mighty enought.
When you see a painting of him, he was always protrayed as a muscular man. He had the power to do every thing he want. He is the king of the world. There will be some characteristic that is lustful for the women in the story.
It is not his fault to love so many girls. It is his RIGHT to make so many grils fell in love with him.

(2) What is the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women? Is it simply lust? Does he intend to find a woman of his true love?
From Greek mythology, we know that Zeus got his power from his father, Cronus. And he used the same way to get the power just as his father did to Uranus. He castrated Cronus and then get the power because in ancient Greek, men's penes represent the symbol of mighty power. I think this kind of power makes Zeus seduce many women. Moreover, I think it's not only simply lust, but also the feeling of conquering women. By the way, from those myths, I don't think that Zeus will find a woman of his true love because of his promiscuous liaisons.

ReplyDeleteI’d like to answer question 3. Does Zeus have the desire to produce more children by different mortal mothers? I think the answer is NO. When Zeus saw the fair women or goodness, he wanted to seduce them and, at the same time, made them have babies. So I think he just wanted to let the beautiful things become his and didn’t have the desire to produce more children. That’s all.
In this case, do you think Zeus can be considered also as a god of fertility?
Yes, I think. We can see that in the stories of Leda and Callisto. When Zeus transformed into a swan, he seduced Leda and made her have babies! It’s so weird!! Because how the swan let a woman have baby. In reality, it’s impossible!! Another story is about Callisto. Zeus turned into a woman, Diana, and seduced Callisto. It made her have babies, too. It was also very strange because how two women have sex and then have babies. So I think the only reason is that Zeus is a god of fertility.
Hello, i am Lilian 99540351.I'd like to answer question 1.
ReplyDeleteWhy was Zeus "unfittingly" characterized as a womanizer? He is the most almighty god on Mt. Olympia after all.
Zeus, Jupiter is the principal god of the Greek pantheon, he rules the sky and the earth. The reason why he can loves the woman one after another, it is because his power, he can get what ever he want. For example, in Danae case, he guised as a brave handsome prince, Danae thought that he had com frome over sea to take her out of her prison-house. Therefore, women are easy fall in love with him and no rejection.

I trust that Zeus just can’t help but to fall in love with them.
And has the desire to have sex with them, not because wants to have children.
Just like normal men in the world!
They all want to flirt with women, but they don’t think that they have responsibility to them.
To Zeus, maybe it is the true love at that moment to everyone who has ever loved.
But it can not say that will maintain for good.
I think that Zeus can be considered the god of fertility.
Because that there is no god like him can produce so many children.
And I think that if Zeus can not be considered the god of fertility.

Maybe it is not simply lust, he may just want to find a woman who matches him or can encourage him when he is in need. He may just want to find his true love and the woman who can back him up. Nowadays, many parents are divorced, and one of the reasons is that they don't match to each other, so I think Zeus just tries to find his true love.

ReplyDeleteI'd like to answer question no.(2) What is the driving force for Zeus to have seduced so many women? Is it simply lust? Does he intend to find a woman of his true love? In my opinion, I think Zeus is a womanizer because he just disguised himself to another forms and seduced women. Many women had relationship with him. It's too complicated. I think f he was a modern person on earth, he should have gotten a disease of sex. Everybody knows that we shouldn't have sexual intercourse with too many people. However, Zeus is a god so he won't get the disease. I think he just wanted to seduce women because he wanted to find his true love. Maybe he think his wife is a tatar so he can't endure anymore. What's more, I also think he just seduced many women so that he can prove that he is a great god and can do many things with his wonderful power. I think he's so greedy. Men should be loyal to women for good!

ReplyDeleteI'd like to answer the question 1.
Although Zeus is the most almighty god, he is still a man. He has the seven emotions and the six sensory pleasures, just like normal people. Zeus cannot resist of women's beauty and constantly seduce women by transforming himself into different forms. But I think he somewhat abuse his power. He even seduced and sexed with a married woman by transforming himself into the form of her husband. It means that the woman doesn't know that the man who sexed with her is Zeus not her husband. Apparently, Zeus doesn't intend to find his true love. He just want to content his desire. He is not just a Casanova, but a womanizer. The name matches the reality.
Topic Three (2010/9/27~10/4):
ReplyDeleteWhat is the nature of Zeus' power?
Hello Vinia, I'm Lulu (99540304)
I'd like to answer question 4.
(4)What is the nature of his power? Is it natural,
intellectual, reproductive, or supernatural?
Nature of the power is his authority in the story.
Supernatural power is irresistible.
In regards to question number one,
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Zeus is seen unfitting as a womanizer even though he is the god sitting on top of the Olympian Mt. because he does not "charm" his love interests, he simply rapes them.
