1. The two characters in the picture are Apollo and Daphne.
2. Daphne was turned into a laurel tree.
3. In order to escape from Apollo's pursuit, Daphne prayed for help to the god of river, Peneus. And after, she was transformed into a laurel tree. To remember her, Apollo used laurel tree to put on his head, and later on, it became a sign of victory

3.Apollo made a wreath of the laurel leaves and put it on his head as a crown to memorize Daphne. Laurel became Apollo's favorite tree.
Laurel tree is an evergreen plant, and now it
represents glory and victory.

Daphne was being pursued by the god Apollo. He was pursuing Daphne because Eros shot an arrow which made Apollo falls in love with Daphne. Tired of being pursued, Daphne begs the river god, Peneus, to turn Daphne into a laurel tree. The purpose of this metamorphosis is to save Daphne from being pursuit by Apollo.

The woman in the picture is the Goddess Flora.
But she had not always been a Goddess. She used to be a maiden, but after she was raped by Anemoi, the God of Wind, she was transformed into the Goddess of Flowers. It was unfortunate that she was raped, but her union with the Wind-God brought the advantage that she became a Goddess herself.
