Topic Four: Zeus' Many Lovers and Children

Topic Four (2010/10/4~10/11): Zeus' many lovers and their heroic offsprings

In addition to natural forces like lightning and rain, the Almighty Zeus is also associated with
human reproductive power.
Defined as a diety of pertility, Zeus' long history
as a womanizer and his role as a loving father
to many illegimate children,
many of whom were great historical characters,
then can be understood and accepted.

Topic for discussions:
(1) Can you name at least three of Zeus' lovers and tell the stories about how they were seduced?

(2) Can you name at least three of Zeus' off-springs produced from these extra-marrital affairs and tell the stories of their great deeds?

  1. Hello, I am Mina 99540346.
I'd like to answer question one.
There are many women falling in love with Zeus, and I just name three of them and talk about their story. The first women is Danae living in a prison for such a long time because her father thinks her son will do harm to him. After Zeus passes by the small window and has a crush a Danae, they get married and even have a baby. But Danae doesn't know he is the almighty god but thinks he is a prince coming to rescue her. However, happiness doesn't last because Zeus vanished from that time on.The second woman is Leto. So fair and gentle is she that Zeus falls in love and marries her. But Juno is angry about the affair and bids all things refuse to help Leto. But after Leto gives birth to Apollo and Diana, everyone is happy and Juno bids all things be kind to Leto. The last woman is Io. She doesn't know Zeus is the ruler of the heavens but a prince from far-off land.Later on,Zuse changes Io into a white cow in order to save her from Juno. But Juno knows it is Io and coaxes Zuse to give the cow to her in order to do harm to her as much as possible. Hopefully, Zeus finally saves her and Io is free from Juno's torture.

  2. Hi, I am Daisy,99540342. I want to answer question no.1.
1.Zeus was attracted by Io who was living in the town of Argos. Io did not know who he was. She just thought that she was a prince. Zeus came in the guise of young man, and didn’t look like the powerful king that he was. So, they fell in love to each other. But Zeus’ wife, Hera, did not love Io at all. When Zeus found that Hera was coming, he turned Io into a white cow. Hera took the cow away and let her out of the town. She let Argus keep watching at Io. Although Zeus sent Mercury to kill the Argus, Hera sent a great gadfly to bite Io and sting her so that Io could have no rest all day long. Finally, Io came to Egypt, and lay down near the bank of River Nile to rest. There, Zeus let Io turn back into the young woman.
2.Leto who lived with the Mighty Folk on the mountain top is a fair and gentle lady, and Zeus loved her and made her his wife. Hera was angry and drove Leto down from mountain and bade all things that can’t help her. Leto kept moving, then turned to Neptune for help. Then, Let swam to Delo and were born two children, Apollo and Artemis. Hera forgot her anger, and bade all things be kind to Leto.
3.Leda was a queen of Sparta. Zeus fell in love with her, so he turned himself into a swan. He let Leda pregnant, so Leda was born four children. One of them is Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. This is the story of Trojan War.
*Zeus like to guise himself and let these women fell in love with him. Some of stories’ outcomes are not very well, because these women have been punished by someone. None of them can live in the happy life with Zeus.

    1. Apollo, the son of Zeus and Leto, Artemis’ twin brother, the god of Light, the Archer-god, is “the most Greek of all the gods.” Given a lyre by Hermes, he is also the master musician. The laurel, changed from Daphne, is his tree; Delphi, under the Parnassus, is the place of his oracle.
    2. Hermes, the son of Zeus and Maia, the Master Thief. He gives Apollo a lyre as an apology for having stealing his herd before he is a day old. The Caduceus is his magic wand.
    3. Hercules, the greatest Hero and Zeus’ son. He saved the Titan Prometheus from his bound on Caucasus.

  6. Hi, Vinia, I'm Rebecca(99540309)
I'd like to answer question 1.
I'm gonna introduce Zeus's three lovers-Io, Leto and Danae.
Io was a wise, kind and fair maiden. Because of her fame, Jupiter wanted to see her in person. He fell in love with her instantly, however, Io didn't know his trule colours. Juno soon knew it and she was jealous of Io. In order to protect Io, Jupiter transformered her in a white cow, but he was too cowardly that he finally gave in to Juno. Io went through a miserable journey. When she wanted to commit suicide, she met Prometheus. Prometheus guided her and told her not to give up. Finally, Io went to Egypt and became the queen.
Leto was a gentle and fair lady. Jupiter loved her and made her his wife. But Juno was jealous of her that she drove Leto down from the mountain. She ordered all things not to help her. Poor Leto had no choice but to escape. She cried for Neptune's help and the god of sea took pity on her. Leto soon born two children in Delos. After the birth of two children, Juno forgot her anger and commanded everything to be kind to Leto.
Danae was imprisioned by his father because of Pythia's prediction when she was young. She never saw a lot of things but only the blue sky through her small window. Many years passed by, she became a tall and beautiful woman. Jupiter saw her and loved her. He showed up in fron of her under the guise of a noble young man. Danae thought he was a prince who had come to rescue her, and by and by they got married.

I would like to answer quesiton No.1.

    (1) Io, she was a fair lady lives in a small town of Argos. Zeus met Io on the riverside, and he made the clouds close so that he could shade Hera's eyes from seeing them. Then Zeus turned Io into a white cow to keep Hera from doubting. However, Hera already knew Io was that cow, so she asked Zeus to give it to her, and made Arugus watch her day and night. Zeus asked Hermes to free Io, but Hermes didn't make it, because of Hera stepping in. In the end, Io finally transformed back into a fair girl by Zeus, and married a king in Egypt. Her great great great grandson was Hercules, who later saved Prometheus from his suffering.

    2. Europa, she was a princess in Asia. While she was watching over the cows, a beautiful bull walked towards her. She didn't know it was Zeus, she liked it at first sight. When she wanted to put a wreath on it's horn, the bull ran and took the girl with it. She later lived in Europe for the rest of her life.

    3. Leda, the queen of Sparta, Zeus transformed into a swan and seduced Leda. Later she gave birth to Helen and her sister, who came out from an egg.

3.Leto: She was another immortal woman sharing the same fortune with IO. She was so fair that Zeus loved her and made her his wife. Once again,Juno heard that and bade all the mortal as well as the immortal to reject her. Finally,to my surprise, everyone including Juno embraced her because She gave birth to two Children, Apollo and Diana. What a perfect ending! It seemed that it is the offsprings that matter in Greek no matter in the heaven or the ground.

I would like to answer question 1.
1.Zeus and Danae: because of Pythia's word about the fate of the king of Argos, Danae was imprisoned in a deep hole under the ground with only a window open on top. The king thought this would prevent the oracle from happening; however, Zeus saw her and fell in love with her from the sky. Danae also loved him because she thought he was a prince to rescue her from her prison.
2.Zeus and Io: Zeus heard about Io's fairness and couldn't help himself to go and see her. Thus, her pleasantness and wisdom charmed him. She didn't know he's the almighty god for he came in disguise of a young man. In the end, Hera was struck with jealousy and Zeus turned her into a white cow to "protect" her. But failed and Io was stuck as a white cow for a long time.
3.Zeus and Leto: So fair and gentle was Leto that Zeus fell in love with her. But that made Juno angry and she bade all things great and small to stop helping her. At last, she seeks help from Poseidon, where she found peace at a island called Delos.

  26. Hello, Vinia! I'm Avis, 99540335.
I'm interested in Zeus' love affair very much. I learned form a book that Zeus has one official wife, Hera and 25 mistresses, such as Europa, IO, and Demeter.
Zeus was attracted by Europa while the maiden was playing with her elegant female companions in the garden. He turned himself into a white bull, which is smelled like flowers, and so gentle that all the maidens rushed to stroke and pet it. Surely, Europe got close to him, patting on his head. Suddenly, the bull took Europa away. Zeus took her to Create, and he promised her that she would bear hem many famous son, including

which like the other women, was unfortunately raped by zeus, and all have their child. however, Io was very miserable after being find out by juno, who punished her and turned her into a white cow. thanks to mercury and zeus, she became the queen of Egypt and had a great descendant named herculus

next it would be europa, because whenever i thought about that name, i can't stop thinking about europe. it is said that the name of each continent was decided by different female names. but for the last continent, lots of women fought for that, which europa won and got the name of that continent. she also gave zeus two children

last but not least, danae. i have a very strong feeling about her is because i once saw the movies "clash of the titans" which is basically talking about the story of perseus. finding medusa, killing monsters, etc

Leda, the spouse of King Tyndareuts of Sparta, bore two mortal children to him, Castor and Clytemnestra. And after being visited by Zeus in the form of a swan, she gave birth to Pollux and Helen.

Io was changed into a heifer by Zeus. Hera had Argus watch her and then sent a gad-fly to plague her. However, she was restored to a woman by Zeus when reaching the Nile and then bore Zeus a son, Epaphus. Additionally, the Ionian was named after her. The Bosphorus, meaning the Ford of the Cow, preserves.

Europa, after whom Europe is named, was carried to Crete by a bull(Zeus in disguise), where she bore Zeus two sons, Rhadamanthus and Minos, two of the three judges of the dead.

Danae is the Princess of Argos, but his father put her in a prison for keeping the cruse from coming true.
Zeus transformed himself to the golden shower to get in the prison and then appeared in front of her with a noble young man looking.
Danas never saw the men before this noble man.
Thus, Danae was fascinated by him.
Second, I want to mention the poor IO!
Zeus came in the guise of a young man so that Io never thought that this man was the king of earth and sky.
She pleased him very much and she loved Zeus very much.
But because of Juno’s envy at Io, she lived in a miserable forepart of her life.
Last but not the least, I want to talk about Leto.
Leto was so fair and gentle so that Jupiter loved her and made her his wife.
