Topic Ten: Jesus Christ's Image

Topic Ten  (2010/11/15~2010/11/22):  The Transformation of Jesus Christ's Image over the Centuries

Jesus Christ came from a culture that strictly banned the making of any image.  Without any portrait of him nor any accounts describing his appearance, how could the later generations manage to create a universally recognized
image of him?

In the class, we had a survey of European church arts from the middle ages to the modern time, trying to understand how the contemporary image of Jesus Christ gradually took shape.

Discussion topic:
Listed below are several images of Jesus Christ over the period about one thousand years.  Which picture do you think best fit the image of Jesus Christ, the Savior, on your part?  Why?

Image One:  Jesus Christ, Monastery Church, Greece, 11th century

Image Two: Jesus Christ, Dome of Cathedral, Palermo, Italy, 1148 AD

Image Three: The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98

Image Four: The Last Supper by Joos van Cleve (1485-1540)

Image Five: The Last Supper by Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98) and Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), 1872

Image Six: Christ and Staff  by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90)

Image Seven: Jesus Christ,  by Nanette Crist at Easter, 1986.

I was struck by Christ Christ's images in the 12th century AD. As shown in the two pieces of mosaic renderings, Jesus is endowed with power and justice. He looks quite serious and objective. However, in the modern pictures, he is getting more and more affectionate and look like a loving teacher or father. I think this is another aspect of Jesus.
No matter he is serous or affectionate, one is bound to live out the best of him/her under Jesus's guidance. This depends on our free will, of course, to follow him or not.

I think the Image Seven: Jesus Christ, by Nanette Crist at Easter, 1986. is my favorite
picture, In my young age, I always went to the
church, and what I saw the picture in the church
are just like the Image Seven , a warm smile on
the Jesus, It is comfortable to see , I think the Image Seven is the best fit to the Jesus , the Savior , As you can see in the bible , Jesus love people and His love will never vanish
That's the reason why I think the Image Seven is the best fit to represent Jesus !!

  3. Hello, Vinia~
    I am Serena.99540344.

I think "Image Three: The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98" can fit the Jesus's image best. At that night, Jesus knew that one of his followers would betray him. But we can see that he seemed to be very calm, showing no negative feeling. He even felt that it is a kind of sacrifice. He sacrificed his own life for all the people around the world. This is the image of Jesus that I knew, calm and willing to do anything he thought good to people.

  4. Hello, Vinia. I’m Justin 99540307.

Jesus Christ, the Savior, in picture three, drawn by Leonardo da Vinci is my original image of Jesus Christ. I have read the book called The da Vinci Code. In the book, the author revealed the secret of Jesus Christ by an exciting way with the fact being revealed little by little. I really enjoyed the book and thought the image of Jesus Christ on the book cover was the right image of Jesus. I was surprised after taking the class because I knew that there was no exact image of Jesus. However, after I saw a lot of images of Jesus, I still thought the image of Jesus in Last Supper fit the personality of Jesus Christ.

  5. Hello, Vinia. I'm Amanda 97540452.

I think that the image six "Christ and Staff" drawn by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90) can best
fit the image of Jesus Christ, the Savior. I once saw the movie "The Passion of the Christ," and Jesus Christ in that movie is just like the image six. My impression of Jesus Christ is mysterious, sophisticated, and shabby-clothed. He always wears a sad and worried expression.

  6. Hello. I'm Chloe. 99540305
I think I often percieve Jesus as in image number 6, perhaps that is the image rooted in my mind from the society and surroundings I grew up in. Most of the time, I imagine Jesus to be a man with long hair and plain clothes that made him look like just any other guy, but he has this aura of calmness and sophistication that diverts him from others.

  7. Hi, I'm Neo 98540451.

I think image 6, Christ and Staff by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90), best fits the image of Jesus Christ. As we know, there's a famous and touchable movie called "The Passion of the Christ
" directed by Mel Gibson, and the image of Jesus Christ in the film is just like picture 6. According to Bible, Jesus Christ is a suffering servant, and his faith is "one man who suffers for all." In New Testament, Jesus Christ sacrifices his life in the agony of crucifixion to atone for human sin. In brief, comparing to other images, I think number 6 is the fittest one to describe Jesus Christ, the Savior.

  8. Hi, Vinia. I’m Eva. (99540308)
I think the Image Six : Christ and Staff by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90) can best fit the image of Jesus Christ, the Savior. In my opinion, when we talk about Jesus, the image that he suffered and dedicated his life to the welfare of human beings would come to our mind and also he was crucified to death for sacrificing his life to save people. So, I think the image six would best fit the image of Jesus.

  9. Hi,Vinia, I'm Mina 99540346.
I think Image Three:The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci can best fit the image of Jesus Christ. What I know about this painting is that Jesus knew one of his followers would betray him. However, he just said that and continued their "last" supper. It seems that he received it with calm, maybe a symble of sacrifice and forgiveness. I think this image is deeply imprited in everybody's mind that Jesus will do everything for people around him, and he is willing to do it with his owe life as a sacrifice. So I think this painting can be the most typical and best descriptive one of Jesus!

  10. Hello, I am Daisy (99540342).

I would choose image six (Christ and Staff by Carl Heinrich Block 1834-90) that I think can be the best image of Jesus Christ. In my mind, I think that Jesus who sent to Earth to forgive the sins for humanity and provided reconciliation with God. In the image six, Jesus, who is also a shepherd, holds a stick that let me know who he is. Looking though his eyes, I see his boldness and I feel that he can understand me thoroughly. His beard that seems does not have time to shave because he always takes care of human beings. So I think that image six is the best fit Jesus for me.

I think the best image is The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98
During the supper time, Jesus knew that he was going to leave his men for someone of them betrayed him. However, he did not show his angry. He washed every man’s feet by himself and told them that you had to do it to each other in the future. In addition, he said that “how did I do to you and you had to do it to each other. And when people saw your kind heart, they would know you all were my fellows. I think Jesus had a very beautiful heart and he never wanted to hurt anyone around them. Also, he hoped that everybody could get love and happiness.

  12. Nice to meet you.I'm Andy Lo,99540314.

In my opinion, I think that the picture six is more suitable for the image of Jesus Christ, for his wooden stick on his right hand and also the wreath of brambles he wore on his head. Why I would say that is because Jesus Christ, the savior,in our mind,is the the person who would rather sacrifice himself than let those villains be punished. So he probably has a emaciated face as well as being skinny in body shape. Also, Jesus's beard and mustache can present him as more decent but distressed of those sins that human did.

I think Image 3, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98
best fit my image of Jesus Christ.
On the wall of the church near my house there is the same picture. When I pass by the church, I will see the picture.
On my own impression of Jesus, he is a great, warm, kind, and gentle.
So, I think that is Jesus Christ.

  15. Hi, Vinia. I'm Emma Chang, 99540316.

For me, I think taht the best fit the image of Jesus Christ will be image 3, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98. This picture is well konwn for we can always see it hung up on the wall in some public places. Also, I have read a book named The da Vinci Code, the author also mentioned the picture so I am familiar with this picture. By the way, I used to live in a convent. Therefore, I could see the statue of Jesus Christ almost every day and it really looked like the appearence of Jesus Christ in the picture. That's the reason for me to choose the image 3.

About this topic, my opinon is as follow. I think the sixth picture, Christ and Staff by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90), fit to Jeseus the most. In this picture, He looks like suffering a lot of pain, and He was aliways patraited as a Savior that suffered a lot for His people. There is still some dignity that shone from his eyes. And,

  17. Hello, Vinia. I'm Rebecca 99540309
Image three "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci is my favorite among seven pictures.
This picture is so famous that it becomes my first impression of Jesus Christ.
In this picture, Jesus knew that he would soon be betrayed by one of his apostle. However, he chose to forgive this disciple's sin. He still remained calm and peaceful. He was ready to face the death. He was willing to sacrifice himself to save ignorant people. The picture portrays his facial expression so vividly that I think this is the best fit the image of our saviour, Jesus Christ.

Image Three: The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98 is my favorite picture. This painting is so famous that for me, I think the image of Jesus is like what the painter, Leonardo da Vinci, drew. The Last Supper specifically portrays the reaction given by each apostle when Jesus said one of them would betray him. All twelve apostles have different reactions to the news, with various degrees of anger and shock.

  19. Hello! Vinia! I am Sam. Student ID is 97350314!
I would like to talk about the Image Six: Christ and Staff by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90)
Because no one has ever seen Jesus Christ before, people like to fantasize the image of Jesus Christ. And the reason why I would choose picture six is that it nearly shows the bravery and generosity of Jesus. Jesus was crucified and the expression should be painful or sad. This aspect wasn’t expressed by the other pictures. He is really a savior, so his image should not be comic or funny anymore.

  20. I'm Robert(99540313). I think image 3, The last supper, fits Jesus Christ on my mind best because the painting had been the only image of Jesus Christ when I was a kid, on account of my deficiency of western religion, I could only perceive one image. This painting was rooted in my mind very much. When Jesus Christ comes to my mind, the image of a long-haired, pale, and suffered man would always print on my mind.

  21. Hi, Vinia. I'm Betty, 99540322.
I think that picture 7 best fits the image of Jesus Christ.
At first my opinion was the same with my classmates: picture 6 best describes the image of Jesus Christ. But then I saw picture 7. At first sight, I thought "Wow, his eyes are beautiful," and that's the point. Jesus is a man understanding people's pain and will listen to them if they have any problems. His crystal-clear eyes maybe are a symbol of understanding. If I talk my problem with him, and he looks at me with his eyes, I would think that he truly know my sorrow. That's why I regard picture 7 best fits the image of Jesus Christ.

  22. Hello, Vinia! I’m Vita,99540340.

I think the picture six Christ and Staff by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90) can fit Jesus’ image the most. In my opinion, when it comes to Jesus, I always think of a skeletal man whose hair is long and black. And he wears a crown which is made of brambles, his cloth is plain just like others. He is a great man, a savior who can sacrifice himself to save other people.

  23. Hello, Vinia~ I am Susan 99540343
I chose Image Three, The Last Supper.
The first image coming to my head is the “love” of Jesus. He ate dinner with his disciples even though he found out someone betrayed him. He dealt with it with love. Besides, Jesus in The Last Supper made me feel reliable and full-loved. Perhaps it’s because eating dinner is a kind of daily routine, I would feel he could also eat with me. To be more specific, I can feel his care and forgiveness to people. And that’s the image of Jesus in my heart. So, that’s the reason why I would chose this picture.

In this picture, Jesus with his bread looked like really sad and worried about something, but he still let us feel he is so kind.

I think the image three, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98, can best fit the image of Jesus.
In this picture, besides the long hair and the beard, there is no clear contour on his face. Almost every man born to be that appearance, having two eyes, a nose, and a mouth, and we can't exactly tell what he look like but a normal man of that time. Because there is no clear discription, this picture can best fit the image of Jesus.

I think picture 2 is the best image of Jesus Christ. In my opinon, Jesus Christ is a man with beard and long hair. The other pictures are all the images of Jesus Christ. However,I am charmed by the picture 2 because of his facial expression. In my mind,I always believe he is a god. Actually,He is a god and also a human. My senior high school teacher always told me a lot of story about Jesus Christ. I think he is a great person! Just like the picture 2, he seemed to be a god and direct the whole world! It's amazing and unbelievable! What's more, I believe the story that he came to the world to save all people.

  27. Hi Vinia, This is Joseph 99540301
I consider image four: The Last Supper by Joos van Cleve is the best image of Jesus when he was on Earth. When he was having the last supper with his disciples, he felt sad for Judah who later sold him to the Pharisees. In picture four, you can see that Jesus was having a kind of sad looks since he was looking his eyes down. On the other hand, going to save us through his salvation was his last task he was going to do on earth. He had a strong responsibility to accomplish his father's will, so he put a really serious but mild front. To tell the truth,i think picture 4 was the image when Jesus was on earth;however, picture 7 is the looks that Jesus has right now in the heaven. Jesus is sitting beside his father with smile on his face since he accomplished his biggest task on earth. I believe Jesus is the greatest and mildest father ever for all Christian.

  28. Hi, Vinia. I’m Emma Lin. My ID number is 99540341.
I think I will choose Image Three: The Last Supper. The Last Supper means the last meal. Jesus ate the dinner with his Twelve Apostles and disciples. Jesus sat the centre seat. I was impressed by it because I heard story about The Last Supper before. Jesus knew that one of his disciples would kill him. I worship him because he knew one of his disciples would betray him but he didn’t do anything to avoid this thing. He seemed to sacrifice himself. I think if I was him, maybe I wouldn’t sit there and ate dinner. I think image three, The Last Supper, best fit the image of Jesus Christ, the Savior.

This picture shows that Jesus has the thorn crown on his head, and the beard that shows the the appearance of Jesus when he was about to be crucified. I think I like this picture is because I like the way Jesus can sacrifice himself for us expecting no repayment.

Actually, I didn't konw a lot about Jesus. When it comes to the image of Jesus, I always reckon he is the saint suffering for the common people.
Thus, the picture which fits the image of Jesus I keep in my mind is picture no.6. The figure in this picture corresponds to Jesus that I imagine in my mind. I think Jesus might look emaciated because he suffered form many torments. Also, his face would always look tranquil on account of his willness to suffering for people.

I prefer Image Six. When I was in the kindergarten, we had some classes about Jesus's story. At that time, my image about Jesus had remained on the shepherd until now. Furthermore, I think that this image is more handsome than others. No matter what Jesus really looked like, Jesus is always so great that makes so many people believe in .

And God also love people and share what he had so they sat at the same table to share the food. In the picture, you can he the center of the picture is God. It stands for the world’s center is God. And in the picture you can see all kind of people men, women, bad guy…. You can feel the harmonic atmosphere in the picture.

  34. Hi Vinia I am Yuka, 99540352.

I think "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci is the most fitting portray of Jesus Christ. In this painting, we can see that, even though the Christ knows he is about to be betrayed by his followers, he opens his arms and shares his love. The people around him seems to be caught up in a quarrel and heated discussion, but the Christ shows no anxiety or frustration on his face. He knows he is about to be arrested and tortured to death. He welcomes his sacrifice because he knows he will be able to redeem the sin of men. That is the Jesus Christ we are so fond of.

I think picture 3, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98, best fit the image of Jesus Christ. Because most people have known this famous picture since they're children, we know in the picture that Jesus Christ knew that one of his followers would betray him. However, he didn't tell anyone who was the betrayer. He wanted all the bad things only to occur to him. I think it's sacrifice. And one of the images of Jesus Christ is the sacrificer, the savior of the world.

I prefer the picture3 I think which is
best fit the image of Jesus Christ.
This painting is famous worldwide and known for Leonardo da Vinci's work. The story behind
The Last Supper is that Jesus Christ had known there was one of his fellows would betray him. However, he didn't reveal the truth. He chose to take on himself because all he thought just brought happiness and love to people.
He always shared what he owned to others. How great sacrifice he offered!

  37. Hi Vinia, I am Jessica 99540319
I think the image No. 3 is best fitted image of Jesus Christ. For I know that Jesus Christ was very gentle and kind. His face seemed to be bothered by the sins of all the mankind, that's why he always had an expression of sadness. Although no one ever knows how Jesus Christ looks like, I believe that he is thin for the plain food which he only eats. And his eyes are both brown with warmness in them. All of these description I heard from the people in church or elsewhere. But I think Jesus Christ doesn't need to be known his real look, as long as his spirit is still there. I think that's the most important of all, no matter how he looks like.

I think image three, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, 1495-98 is my impression about Jesus Christ. I remembered that from my elementary to senior high, this picture always showed on my art book. Therefore, when it comes to the issues about Jesus Christ, I always think of it. In this picture, when the disciples knew that one of them betrayed Jesus Christ, they all stood with astonishment and confusion. However, only Jesus remained tranquil. I reckon this action best fits Jesus’s image because he is so sacred in the heart of followers throughout the world.

I think the image Two: Jesus Christ, Dome of Cathedral, Palermo, Italy, 1148 AD is the best portrait to describe Jesus Christ. Judging from this picture, I think this man looks like a saint with a pure heart. Although I have no feelings toward the beard, I think this man looks good with his beard. And what’s behind him is a cross, which symbols the Jesus Christ. And I wonder if the book being held by him is bible. And actually I can’t tell you the exact reason why I think this portrait is suitable for him, I think it’s just a feeling. It gives me a peaceful atmosphere and I feel like I am close to him.

I think image3, the last supper by Leonardo da Vinci, fits my imagination of Jesus Crist the most. There is his one hand up and another down showing the giving and recieving. Besides, it also expressed that he is so wise to knowing someone is going to betray beforehand. his personality of wisdom, mercifulness, and scraficing which I consider how Jesus is can all be seen in the painting.

In my opinion, image number six, Christ and Staff by Carl Heinrich Block (1834-90), is an image that best illustrates what Jesus is to me because it shows that he is suffering for the world. More over, his glance gives the viewer a sense of guilt for not living up to his standards, in which I think fully represents what Jesus is to me.

I think Image Three:The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci can best fit the image of Jesus Christ. In this painting is that Jesus knew one of his followers would betray him and told his supports. However, he accepted him and thought Jesus himself was a sacrifice. I think this image of Jesus inspirited in everybody's mind because after Jesus knew this thing, he was still calm, forgivable and will do everything for people around him, and he is willing to sacrifice himself just for the world. So I think this painting can be the most typical and best descriptive one of Jesus!

  51. I think I can picture Jesus like the one depicted in picture six. It is big enough to capture all his features clearly, in his case his expression of suffering, although the picture could (maybe) have done without the thorn-crown. Of course, some people like to see Jesus in a pose and with features of bliss ans wisdom, but the part of his life that is more known to most people is that of his role as our saviour, and that role was full of anguish.
