Topic Fourteen (2010/12/13~2010/12/20): Mistery of the lost brother, Joseph?
Being his father's favorite child in the family, Joseph was sold to Egypt by his elder brothers. What might be the reason(s) that led to this tragedy?
Discussion topic:
Should Josoph be responsible for his own misfortune? Or, should his elder brothers be blamed for the evil doing?
Hi Vinia

I would like to talk about topic 1 :
Being his father's favorite child in the family, Joseph was sold to Egypt by his elder brothers. What might be the reason(s) that led to this tragedy?
First , Joseph is the youngest son in the Jacob family , but his mother is Rachel also Jacob's favorite son .because he was good, and faithful, and thoughtful. Jacob gave to Joseph so many things that raise Joesph's brother jealous . Maybe this is the reason why he had been sold to the Egypt , Because right now , many company have same example.A rich man have three son , When the rich man died , his will is to give the youngest son many money , and the elders brother would so anger so they decide to do evil things .

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think this tragedy can’t blame Joseph’s brother nor himself. I think this responsibility should blame on Jacob, their father. I think Jacob has a different attitude toward his sons. If he had the same attitude toward their sons Joseph’s brothers maybe won’t sell he to Egypt. But in the end of this story, his brother was regret, too. And they reunite again. It’s so good to see this perfect ending. In our life time there are so many things make us upset. Maybe choose forgiveness is the best choice.
Hello, Vinia. I'm Emma Chang, 99540316.
ReplyDeleteThough I take pity on what Joseph encountered in his life, I still think that Joseph should also receive the punishment because he was somehow too pround and his attitude was also the reason leading to this tragedy. Joseph should not speak like a king to his brothers and what he said poses a threat to his brothers so Joseph had made a mistake at first. Joseph's brothers, of course, should be blamed for this tragedy for they betrayed his family selling his own brother as a slave. They should not be so jealous just because Joseph is Jacob's favorite son, Joseph's brothers are also too greedy for they think Joseph will take away everything from Jacob and they will be left nothing. Therefore, they all receive the punishment the God gave them. Joseph was sold and served as a slave and his brothers suffer from famine and more important they felt guilty almost the whole life before meeting Joseph again.
Hello~Vinia. I am Serena.99540344.
ReplyDeleteFrankly speaking, I hated Joseph at first. I thought that he was too proud of himself and that he should be responsible of his own misfortune. But as the story goes on, I found that Joseph is actually a kind and wise man. I even respect Joseph in the end. However, I still think that his elder brother shouldn't be blamed because each person has different thought in mind. As long as they are all kind to each other and forgive each other in the end, they all would be good men in my mind. I believe that bible is a positive book and it would hope that nobody would be blamed for their deeds.
Hi, I'm Jonathan 99540310
ReplyDeleteI think Joseph should blame himself for the misfortune that he encountered in his life, he was too proud of himself. I even think that he doesn't deserve to be the leader of Egypt, he never learned a lesson, he was as proud as ever when he was sold by his brothers, and somehow he ended up in Egypt and became the leader. I think he should be responsible for his own misfortune, and I don't think he deserves his fortune.
Hi, Vinia. I’m Emma. My ID number is 99540341.
ReplyDeleteJoseph was Rachel’s child. He had ten older brothers who were born from Leah. His father only loved Rachel so he loved Joseph the best. It made his older brothers envious of him so his brothers always did wrong things that Joseph would tell his father. His older brothers were angry at him. He made two dreams that made his brothers hated him so much. His older brothers did evil things that he had a misfortune in his later life. Maybe Joseph should be responsible for his own misfortune and his older brothers should be blamed for the evil doing but maybe all of these things were planned by God.
Hello, Vinia, I am Justin 99540307.
ReplyDeleteI though Joseph’s misfortune was partly blamed to his brothers and partly blamed to Joseph himself. Apparently, Joseph’s brothers sold him to Egypt because of the jealousness. Then, he was treated as a slave and led a miserable life. It seemed that all of Joseph’s misfortune was derived from his brothers’ cruelty. However, I thought Joseph should be responsible for is as well. He told his brothers about his dream. His brothers thought he was too proud of himself even though he was only a child then. Yet, if Joseph had not been sold to Egypt, he would not have been the leader of Egypt and his dream would not have been carried out. I thought it was all the Lord’s arrangement!
Hello, Vinia, I’m 99540302, Joyce.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, this tragedy couldn't blame anyone. If Joseph didn't go through all the evil things, he wouldn't know how to deal with everything in Egypt.
Maybe all the evil things were given by God. God wanted to test him that he can be the one who led Egypt or not.

ReplyDeleteI think both Joseph and his brothers were responsible for Joseph's later misfortune. For Jacob had never concealed his favor to Joseph, which made Joseph arrogant and think of himself all the time. It not only damaged his relationship between his brothers and him, but also led to his brothers jealousy. If Joseph had kept a low profile, and had been more understanding to his brothers. It might not be like this kind of conseqence. Joseph's brothers also did wrong in this event, for they chose the wrong way to solve this problem, instead of having conversation with their father or Joseph. So I think that both of them had mistakes.
I'm Monica, 99540337.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, none of them should be blamed for all the things which took place. It was all because of the destiny. God had already arranged these things, so things happened under God's control.
Hi,Vinia. I'm Rebecca.(99540309)
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, everyone should take a part of responsibilities for this tragedy. If Joseph's father didn't show strong favoritism to Joseph, his brothers would not be jealous of him. If Joseph didn't tell his dreams to his brothers in a proud way, his brothers would not think that Joseph looked down on them. If his brothers didn't sell Joseph to Egypt, then the following stories would not happen. Therefore, everyone couldn't weasel out of their responsibilities. They all got involved in this incident.
Hello, I'm Chloe. 99540305.
ReplyDeleteI don't think only Joseph is responsible for his own tragedy, because he encountered a lot of misunderstandings. For example, his father could be blamed for claiming Joseph as his favorite son. Joseph shouldn't tell his condescending dream to his brothers, that only makes them mad and want to do bad things to him. That causes him to be sold to Egypt, so all these incidents are all connected together, not only one person should be blamed.

ReplyDeleteHello,Vinia. I'm Mina 99540346.
ReplyDeleteI think Joseph should take the responsibility for his brothers' deed because he was showing off by telling everyone his two dreams about sheaves and stars. And that made his elder brothers unhappy.Besides, being his father favorite son, his father gave him a coat of bright color; however, his brothers got nothing from their father. And that made his brother jealous. On the other hand, I also think that Joseph's elder brothers should be blamed for their wicked deed because they are older than Joseph, and they sould learn kindness and should not do things thoughtlessly. If they want to win their father's heart, they should do other things to make their father impressed instead of selling Joseph. And after Joseph was sold to Egypt, their father still loved him and missed him and cared for Benjamin a lot instead of caring for Joseph's elder brothers. So, I thinks not only Jpseph should be responsible for his fate, but also his elder brothers should be responsoble for this tragedy.
Hello, Vinia~ I am Eva and my student number is 99540308
ReplyDeleteI think all of them had to take responsibility for their acts. For Joseph, he thinks that his father loves him the most so sometimes he is too proud for having most of his father’s love and that’s why his brothers hate him and want to kill him. So, he should be responsible for his misfortune. However, his brothers sold Joseph to Egypt and before that they even want to kill him. I totally agree that they should take responsibility for their evil doing. Though Joseph is too proud of himself, they still can’t have the thoughts like want to kill him or sell him because he is their brother!
Hi, Vinia. I’m Pattie. 99540333 Should Joseph be responsible for his own misfortune? Or, should his elder brothers be blamed for the evil doing? I think Joseph was responsible for his won misfortune because he kept showing off what he got from his father to his brothers. When he dreamed the dream, he told his brothers. Of course his brothers would think that he was meant to tell them because he wanted to show off. If he would not show off, his brothers would not do this evil thing. Joseph should be blamed for as well. Of course his brothers acted overly and they should not sell him to Egypt so I think everyone has the reason to be blamed.
ReplyDeleteHello, Vinia, I am Daisy, 99540342.
ReplyDeleteI think Joseph should be responsible for part of his own misfortune. He is so proud of himself. While his older brothers did the wrong acts, Joseph told their father. This behavior made his brothers very angry at him. Also, their father, Jacob should be blame because he gave Joseph more love. Parent should treat their children with justice. Third, his elder brothers should also be blamed for the evil doing. Because of envious, they hurt their own younger brother. It is a happy ending in the end. I think they were all given a lesson.
Hi, Vinia. I’m Amanda. 97540452
ReplyDeleteI don't think Joseph showed off what happened in his dream because he just told the truth. Being his father's favorite child in the family, Joseph was sold to Egypt by his elder brothers. It was inevitable for Joseph's brothers to envy and hate Joseph. However, it's terribly wrong to hurt their little brother. Therefore, I think Joseph's elder brothers should be blamed for the evil doing.

ReplyDeleteI'm Robert 99540313. I don't think Joseph should be responsible for his own misfortune. First, the reason why Joseph gained more love from his father is just because he was born by his father's favorite wife. It's nothing to do with whether Joseph flattered his father or not. Second, although Joseph publicly told his brothers what he had dreamed, I think he was just too innocent to notice that his dreams might piss them off. Joseph was just a little child, how could his brothers take his words seriously? They're too narrow-minded and evil. So they could turn whatever Joseph said into arrogant meaning and bear malice toward their own youngest brother. Therefore, it's not Joseph to blame but his brothers themselves.
ReplyDeleteYes, Prof.Vinia. I am Andy Lo(99540314).
ReplyDeleteAs we had discussed this question on the westerliterature course, many classmates mentioned that it was Joseph's vanity that causeed to his jouurney to the Eygpt. I firmly agree with it, but his brothers still couldn't do such things to Joseph, for he is their brother. In my opinion, such things could be avoided just by the way of discussion,or we don't need our mouth organ, our trachea, and so on. Beast could't speak, so they use the most violent way to deal with things. However, we are humankinds, smartest creature in the earth. Why is that?? Because we could make good use our body part, including brain, mouth, etc, we could deal with manythings without our fists.
That's all. Thanks for your reading!!!

ReplyDeleteI think no one should be blamed.God chose him to save the people out there.God made this decision to make Joseph become a kind and dedicated person who worship god himself full-heartedly.Joseph himself accepted such arrangement,no,he accepts all God set him to do,and do it with his best undoubtedly.Everything will be OK with God.That's what he believes.

ReplyDeleteShould Josoph be responsible for his own misfortune? Or, should his elder brothers be blamed for the evil doing?
I think Joseph should be a little responsible for his own misfortune because of his innocent. At first, he told Jacob that he dreamed that he would be a king and his brothers would all kneeled down in front of him. I think he was so stupid because Jacob loved him much more than his brothers. How he dare to tell them that he will be the king in the future? If I were Joseph's brother, I will feel that he is arrogant and goes beyond his depth. However, I think that his brothers was wrong because they sold Joseph to another man. The loss of Joseph made Jacob a great sorrow. What's worse,Joseph's brothers would feel sorry for him because of what they had done to him. So, they are ashamed and uneasy!
Hey, I'm Nina 99540315
ReplyDeleteSeeing at different aspect and standing in different roles, I think none of them can be said to be wrong with their doings. Joseph get more love and care from his father, merely because of his beloved mother and, of course, his brothers will be jealous about that. Therefore, somehow i think Joseph deserved to be sold and it's how humanity is that when somebody is standing on our way and we will do anything only to kick him/her off. Well, his brothers' wrong behaviors ended up making him discover his amazing talents to predict future by dreams and helped people in Egypt. Eventually he and his brothers all learn form their experience that Joseph had learned sympathy and forgiving. Others had regreted about what they had done and had been kind and caring to Benjemin, even not being the most beloved son by their father. So, how can we judge who should be blamed for all these since everyone had learned the most important thing through out their lives.
Hi, Vinia! I'm Avis,99540335.
ReplyDeleteAs for me, I think there is no one should be blamed. Were it not for Joseph's brothers,
who sold him out, he wouldn't be the one that own so many things and control the land. His power even surpasses his wicked brothers eventually.
Maybe Joseph would be very angry and disappointed at his brothers for selling him out. However,he is so kind that he gave food to his brothers after so many years. He forgives his brothers. In terms of this, I think he is so kind-hearted and virtuous.
Hello, Vinia
ReplyDeleteI'm Helen and my student ID is 99540325.
I think all of them should be blame for this tragedy because they all have responsibility for this situation.
Firstly, I think maybe Joseph is some kind of showing off his ability that he can hear and know what God said.
Second, Because Joseph has this kind of ability, his elder brothers all envy him. They try to get rid of him.
So Joseph should be blame for showing off and his brothers should be blame for envying his brother and doing some hurt to him.
Hi, Vinia. I'm Vicky 99540323.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think both of them are wrong. Joseph should be humble and not be so naive. Maybe he is innocent, but he shouldn't say his dream that he might be the one to rule over his brothers and to be king of Egypt to his brothers over and over again. Because he is younger than those brothers, when his brothers heard what Joseph had said, they absolutely felt jealous. It's humanity. It's normal to have that kind of feeling. However, they shouldn't sell Joseph to a stranger just for his words that they don't like. It's very cruel to do that. Though their mother is different from Joseph's, they still have the same father. So, I think it's evil to harm their own brother like this way. They can simply have a fight or do something else. They don't have to treat Joseph like this. Also, I think Jacob, Joseph's father, needs to be responsible for the tragedy, for he shows favouritism to Joseph. That's might also be one of the reasons why Joseph's brothers wanted to sell him to someone.
Hello, I’m Amy. 99540348
ReplyDeletequestion: Should Joseph be responsible for his own misfortune? Or, should his elder brothers be blamed for the evil doing?
Ans: I think it is his elder brothers should be blamed for this tragedy. If it were not for them, Joseph might be living in harmony with his dad. They were jealous of Joseph and they even sold him to others. But there is still one of those brothers who is kind to Joseph. But I think, if this tragedy didn’t happen, Joseph wouldn’t realize how stupid and immature he was. And after all the things happened, Joseph began to understand that he should treat others more kindly and he should be more considerate and thoughtful. He should feel happy for his beloved brothers and their regretting of the evil doing. That is what made him a mature person as well as a wise king.

ReplyDeleteHi Vinia, this is Joseph 99540301
ReplyDeleteI think Joseph's brothers should be blamed for what they had done. When Joseph was a child, he was so innocent to speak his wild dreams out to his brothers which made them very angry. At the same time, his father,Jacob always took sides with Joseph so hatred started to fill in Joseph's brother's hearts. I think Joseph didn't mean to boast himself by speaking the dreams out. He just wanted to share his dream. It was also not his fault that is Jacob loved him so much. Above all, Joseph's brothers were so narrow-minded. Therefore, they would do such a thing on Joseph and their father. But the truth could tell, they deserved what they did at the end of the story.
Hi, I'm Neo 98540451.
ReplyDeleteI think we can not only blame on Joseph's elder brothers. Although their behaviors are immoral, Joseph has to undertake some responsibility. His brothers sold him because his proud dream; however, if Joseph didn't tell his dream, maybe his brothers would not be jealous of him. In my opinion, both of them are wrong. Nevertheless, in the end, Joseph forgave his brothers and his brothers also felt sorry about what they had done before. It's kind of a happy ending. Back to the thesis, I think Josoph should be responsible for his own misfortune; moreover, his elder brothers should also be blamed for the evil doing.
Hi, Vinia. I’m Eva Huang 99540321.
ReplyDeleteI think not only Joseph, but his all brothers should be responsible for the misfortune. At first, I can’t say his father’s favor to Joseph is a wrong thing; however, I think this is an important point that makes Joseph become proud and his brothers envious of him. Although it seems that Joseph was young and innocent, he did some things to make his brothers really angry at him, such as telling their father that his brothers did wrong acts and the dream he dreamed. Therefore, his brothers ended up selling him as a slave to Egypt in revenge. The story reveals the natural side and behavior about humans. But without this event, we can’t see the change and the true emotion about a family.
Hi, all. I'm Rain(99540339)
ReplyDeleteI think Joseph and his father should be blamed. Because of Jacob's partial love, as a so called wise man, Joseph should know that this would lead to the jealous of his brothers. However, he didn't restrain himself but kept saying something offensive to his brothers, and end up being sold as slave by his brothers. But, still, I think partial love is not the main factor that he was hated, because the partial love to the youngest child is general everwhere. The main cause should be his character, personality. It is his words that lead to his misery.
My student ID is 99540338.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think the elder brothers should be punished for what they did. It is very cruel of them to do this kind of thing, especially when Joseph begged them with tears in his eyes. Although they all regretted afterward for what they had done, they still did not do anything to make it back in normal. I think it is really large-minded of Joseph, even though he did something bad to test his brothers if they regretted for they had done to him. It is a good way to make those brothers know what they had done is wrong and cruel.
Hi Vinia ,I'm Francis. 99540320
ReplyDeleteI think that Joseph was innocent, and he didn't do anything wrong.
The reason why his elder brothers did such evil things to him were that they were envious of Joseph and Joseph was so much better
no matter in which partof him, and he got most of his fathers love, and attention.
Besides, the other eleven brothers and Joseph were born by different women, and they were not so close to him.
I think Joseph's elder brothers should be blamed for the evil doing, because they were much older that Joseph and should
be mature. They should not have this childish mind to do all these things to Joseph.
Hello, Vinia. I'm Betty, 99540322.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think both parts should be responsible for this tragedy. Joseph is too proud, showing off how he is greatly loved by his father. As a result, if anything miserable happens to him, he deserves it. But being his older brothers, they should know that that is how Joseph behaves. Because they are older, they ought to be more mature, trying to calm down or cotrol their temper when Joseph irritates them.
Hi,Vinia. I'm Mavis 99540303.
ReplyDeleteShould Josoph be responsible for his own misfortune? Or, should his elder brothers be blamed for the evil doing?
I think both of Joseph and his elder brothers should be responsible for this tragedy.
His elder brother did evil things is because their father loves Joseph especially, and Joseph was showing off by telling his brothers his dreams.
Although Joseph was too showing off, I think his elder brothers should not did that to him.
Hello, Vinia. I’m Jane 99540347.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think both Joseph and his elder brothers should be responsible for this tragedy. His brothers were so jealous of Joseph because he was loved by their father Jacob more, but it’s not Joseph’s fault, it’s their father that didn’t treat them equally, but Joseph should not tell his proud dreams which aroused his brothers’ anger, both of the reasons led to his brothers sold him to Egypt. But if they didn’t sell him to Egypt, they couldn’t regret, change, correct their errors and then reform themselves, all of them couldn’t learn such a big lesson.
Hello,Vinia. I am Annie 99540330.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I am concerned, it is really hard to tell this tragedy should be blamed for who,is Joseph or his elder brother. There are different aspects which can be taken into consideration. If Joseph didn't boast of himself, though,he didn't mean to do that, his brother wouldn't treat him so cruelly. Fortunately, Joseph survived and also became the king just like his dream told. Besides, time went by, his elder brother felt very regretful for what they had even done to their dear brother so they wanted to make up for Joseph. Ultimately, they didn't have hatred and sorrow within their minds, and united.

ReplyDeleteHello, I am Lilian 99540351.
ReplyDeleteBeing his father's favorite child in the family, Joseph was sold to Egypt by his elder brothers. The reasons that led to this tragedy are two strange dreams that he had. He dreamed that they were out in the field binding sheaves, when suddenly my sheaf stood up, and all your sheaves came around it and bowed down to his sheaf. Another dream is he saw in his dream the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars, all come and bow to him. Joseph should not be responsible for his own misfortune because he is chose by God. His elder brother should be blamed for their evil doing, they sold Joseph away because of jealous.
I don't think Joseph should be blamed for his tragedy. Some people might point out that it was him who upset his brothers with what he said, but he never meant to upset anybody or to brag. He simply told them about his dream. And his older brothers should have understood that, they being older and wiser. And even IF he had meant to brag with his dream, they should have taken into consideration that he was only a child.
